Trichomoniasis

A common STI that often has no symptoms. Easily treated with antibiotics.

In short

Trichomoniasis is a common STI that often causes no symptoms and is easily cured with antibiotics. Treating partners at the same time prevents reinfection. NHS sexual health testing is free.

Overview

What is trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis ("trich") is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a tiny parasite. It often causes no symptoms, especially in men, but can cause discharge, soreness, and discomfort. It's easily treated with antibiotics, and treating sexual partners at the same time prevents it bouncing back.

  • Advice to avoid sex until you and partners have completed treatment
  • Referral to an NHS sexual health service for testing and partner notification (free)

What we don't do

  • On-site testing and partner notification (free via NHS sexual health services)
  • Management of complex or treatment-resistant cases (specialist services)

FAQ

Common questions about trichomoniasis

How do you get trichomoniasis?
It's a sexually transmitted infection caused by a tiny parasite, passed through unprotected sex. Many people have no symptoms and can pass it on unknowingly.
How is it treated?
With a course of antibiotics (metronidazole). Partners should be treated at the same time, and you should avoid sex until everyone has finished treatment.
Can men get it?
Yes, though men often have no symptoms. They can still carry and pass on the infection, so partner treatment is important.
Where can I get tested?
NHS sexual health services offer free testing. We can advise on testing and treat where appropriate.
