Mole & skin check

Worried about a mole or spot? A GP assessment, with fast referral if anything needs it.

In short

If you're worried about a mole or skin spot, a GP can assess it, reassure you if it's harmless, and refer you urgently if it needs a specialist, often the fastest route to peace of mind.

Overview

What is mole & skin check?

A mole and skin check is an assessment of a mole, spot, or skin lesion you're concerned about. Most moles are harmless, but changes in size, shape, or colour, or a sore that won't heal, can occasionally signal skin cancer. The GP's role is to assess risk, reassure where appropriate, and refer promptly for anything that needs a specialist eye.

Symptoms

Common symptoms

  • A new mole or spot, or one that's changing
  • A mole changing in size, shape, or colour
  • An irregular or uneven edge or colour
  • Itching, bleeding, or crusting of a mole
  • A sore or spot that won't heal

When to act

When to see a doctor

Book a GP if a mole is new, changing, irregular, itching, or bleeding, or if you have a spot or sore that won't heal. Early assessment matters, skin cancers are very treatable when caught early.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent help if

  • A mole that's rapidly changing, bleeding, or ulcerating (needs prompt assessment)
  • A new dark streak under a nail, or a changing spot on the sole or palm
  • A sore that won't heal over several weeks

Call 999 for life-threatening emergencies or NHS 111 for urgent non-emergency advice.

Treatment

How a private GP can help

  • A careful assessment of the mole or lesion you're concerned about
  • Use of the ABCDE guide (asymmetry, border, colour, diameter, evolving) to assess risk
  • Clear reassurance when a lesion looks harmless
  • Urgent (2-week-wait) referral to dermatology if anything looks suspicious
  • Advice on sun protection and self-monitoring
  • Guidance on photographing moles to track changes

What we don't do

  • Mole removal and skin biopsies (referred to dermatology or surgery)
  • Cosmetic skin lesion removal

FAQ

Common questions about mole & skin check

What should I look out for in a mole?
The ABCDE guide: Asymmetry, an irregular Border, more than one Colour, a Diameter over about 6mm, and Evolving (changing). Any of these, or a mole that itches or bleeds, is worth checking.
Can a GP tell if a mole is cancerous?
A GP assesses the risk and decides whether urgent referral is needed. Definitive diagnosis of skin cancer is made by a specialist, often with a biopsy, which is why we refer promptly when needed.
Can you remove moles?
We don't remove moles ourselves. Suspicious lesions are referred for specialist assessment; cosmetic mole removal is done by private dermatology or surgery.
How can I protect my skin?
Use sunscreen, avoid burning and sunbeds, cover up in strong sun, and check your skin regularly, photos help you spot changes.
