Menopause & HRT

Hot flushes, sleep and mood changes, brain fog. Support and treatment that helps.

In short

Menopause and perimenopause symptoms are very treatable. A GP can assess you, explain the benefits and risks of HRT, prescribe the right type, and review it over time, as well as offer non-hormonal options.

Overview

What is menopause & hrt?

The menopause is when periods stop permanently, usually around age 51, with perimenopause the years of changing hormones leading up to it. Falling oestrogen causes symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep and mood changes, brain fog, and vaginal dryness. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) replaces oestrogen (with progesterone if you still have a womb) and is the most effective treatment for most women.

Symptoms

Common symptoms

  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Irregular or stopping periods
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood changes, anxiety, or low mood
  • Brain fog and poor concentration
  • Vaginal dryness and reduced libido
  • Joint aches

When to act

When to see a doctor

Book a GP if menopause or perimenopause symptoms are affecting your life, you want to discuss HRT, or you need a review of treatment you're already on. Any bleeding after 12 months without periods needs prompt assessment.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent help if

  • Bleeding after your periods have stopped for 12 months (postmenopausal bleeding, always needs prompt assessment)
  • New breast lump or changes
  • Calf pain or swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness on HRT (possible clot, call 111 or 999)
  • Very low mood or thoughts of self-harm (please use crisis resources)

Call 999 for life-threatening emergencies or NHS 111 for urgent non-emergency advice.

Treatment

How a private GP can help

  • A thorough assessment of your symptoms and medical history
  • A discussion of the benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for you
  • Prescription of HRT (patches, gels, sprays, or tablets, plus progesterone where needed)
  • Vaginal oestrogen for dryness and urinary symptoms
  • Non-hormonal options where HRT isn't suitable or wanted
  • Lifestyle advice and follow-up reviews to fine-tune treatment

What we don't do

  • Investigation of postmenopausal bleeding (urgent referral to NHS gynaecology)
  • Specialist menopause clinic care for complex cases (we can refer)

FAQ

Common questions about menopause & hrt

Do I need a blood test to diagnose menopause?
Usually not if you're over 45 with typical symptoms, diagnosis is clinical. Blood tests can help in younger women or where the picture is unclear.
Is HRT safe?
For most women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits of HRT usually outweigh the risks. We discuss your individual risks (such as clot or breast cancer history) and choose the safest type for you.
Can HRT help perimenopause?
Yes. Symptoms often start in perimenopause while you're still having periods, and HRT can help then too.
What if I can't or don't want to take HRT?
There are effective non-hormonal options for symptoms like hot flushes and mood, plus lifestyle measures and vaginal treatments. We'll find an approach that suits you.
